NOTTAWA TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – We are learning more about an accident in St. Joseph County Sunday night that claimed the life of a 13-year-old girl.
Michigan State Police say in addition to the the 13-year-old who perished and the 19-year-old driver, there were six other people in the vehicle, the oldest of whom was 21 and the youngest was a 10-year-old. They were all were taken to the hospital with what were described as serious injuries. Most have since been released.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, however, MSP investigators said it’s still unclear who in the vehicle may have been drinking due to conflicting witness statements.
Blood samples were taken from multiple occupants of the car and it will be a few weeks before investigators can say anything definitively.
Investigators are now working on trying to reconstruct the scene and canvass the area for any witnesses or security footage from the incident.
The accident happened on M-86 near Shimmel Road around 9:30 p.m. Sunday night.
