BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB/WNWN)- A Calhoun County teenager was recently honored with the 2025 Michigan Young Hero Award, recognizing her quick thinking and courage during a life-threatening emergency involving her bonus father late last year.
14- year old Dakoda Carpenter, received the award from the Michigan chapter of NENA (National Emergency Number Association) at the annual 911 joint APCO/NENA conference in Muskegon. The award celebrates young individuals who demonstrate extraordinary bravery and poise when calling 911 in a crisis.
Last December Dakoda dialed 911 when she found her bonus father, James Snodderly, unresponsive due to a diabetic episode. Despite the emotional intensity of the moment, with her mother out of town and younger brother searching for sugar, Dakoda remained calm. She followed emergency instructions from Calhoun County 911 Emergency Telecommunicator Christy Kubasiak, who helped her provide life-saving aid until first responders arrived.
Thanks to Dakoda’s composure and Christy’s steady guidance, James made a full recovery.
The Michigan Young Hero Award is presented annually to a young person in Michigan who makes a significant impact during a 911 call. The award highlights the importance of public education about 911 and celebrates youth who act with bravery and presence of mind in emergency situations.
