PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB/WNWN) – Fire destroyed a grocery store in Calhoun County’s Pennfield Township over the weekend.
Fire crews from multiple agencies spent over ten hours battling the blaze at Bailey Park Thriftway Saturday night into early Sunday morning.
Fire officials say efforts to extinguish the blaze were hampered because a new roof had been placed over the old roof and the fire became caught between the two.
About an hour before the grocery store fire was reported fire crews were dispatched to the scene for a reported explosion and dumpster fire. That fire was promptly extinguished without incident.
Bailey Park Thriftway had been in that same location for 70 years after first opening in 1955.
Investigators from the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal Division and the Calhoun County Detective Bureau were requested to assist in the investigation.
During the course of the investigation, a tip was received indicating that juveniles had been seen playing with fireworks near the area. Those individuals were identified later that evening.
Anyone who witnessed either fire and has not yet spoken with investigators is encouraged to contact Detective Jonathan Pignataro at 269-781-0880. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Silent Observer at 269-964-3888.
