KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Tuesday announced the first grant recipients in the state’s first-ever program aimed at strengthening Michigan’s middle-of-the-supply-chain agri-food systems, and a program in Kalamazoo is one of those receiving money.
The Kalamazoo Valley Community College Food Innovation Center, an education center, urban farm and food hub located just south of downtown Kalamazoo, is getting $40,920 from the state.
The Food Innovation Center was built in 2015 as part of the Bronson Healthy Living Campus, a collaboration between Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Bronson Healthcare, and Integrated Services of Kalamazoo.
The new Farm-to-Family “Food Hubs and Farm Stops” grant program is designed to fund “food hubs” to help small farms grow by offering a combination of production, distribution, and marketing services.
