PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage City Council hopes to avoid future embarrassment and controversy by approving a new policy on how and to whom they issue proclamations and resolutions.
The issue last surfaced two months ago when they honored the 75th anniversary of Scientology, which drew fire from residents who complained the city shouldn’t be honoring any religion, let alone one as controversial.
It was also an issue when for most of last year the council claimed it couldn’t issue a proclamation condemning the Gaza War, because they had a policy excluding non-city issues.
Apparently there was no formal policy, just a guideline that was never adopted.
Portage City Council Member Terry Urban pointed that out at their last meeting, when he suggested they make it policy and add a statement giving the council some say in issuing resolutions.
New policies covering those issues will be up for a vote tonight.
