LANSING, MI — A new report shows just how far Michigan children are lagging behind in fourth-grade reading, eight-grade math and overall in certain K-12 student groups compared to the rest of the country.
The new study from NAEP [National Assessment for Educational Progress], Michigan ranked 44th in the nation for fourth-grade reading and 31st for eighth-grade math in 2024. The data is often referred to as the nation’s report card on how states are doing at the job of educating students.
The state was among the bottom 10 states for learning loss. It joined Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Virginia and West Virginia on the list, according th NAEP.
