KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The death of Pope Francis drew tributes from two Kalamazoo city commissioners at last night’s meeting on the day after Easter Sunday.
Commissioner Don Cooney, a former Catholic priest, had high praise for the Pontiff, calling him a man who exemplified the values we should all pursue.
“He saw people were hungry and he tried to feed them, he saw people that were immigrating from their country, and he asked for compassion,” said Cooney.
Vice Mayor Jeanne Hess said Pope Francis was a great man.
“He lived a life of great faith of meaning of purpose, bringing meaning and purpose into the lives of millions of Catholics, he certainly has inspired me, and I pray that he rests in peace.”
The 88-year-old leader of the Catholic Church had been recovering from a case of double pneumonia but reportedly died from a stroke and heart failure.
Pope Francis was the 266th man to become the Bishop of Rome, serving in the position for 12 years.
