LAGRANGE, IN (WTVB) – The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office as begun an investigation is underway into the death of a 37-year-old Sherwood Township, Michigan man who died at the LaGrange County, Indiana Jail Saturday.
William Howard Ellis was found unresponsive in his cell around 2:30 p.m. Efforts by first responders were unsuccessful.
Ellis was arrested in February 2024 on charges of possession and sale of methamphetamine and battery of three law enforcement officers, causing injury to two of them. He faced 30 years in prison plus habitual offender enhancements in LaGrange County if convicted.
While out on bond he was arrested again in May 2024 for thefts in Elkhart and Allen counties in Indiana. Charges in those cases were pending.
A February trial date in LaGrange County had been canceled. A hearing on a motion to dismiss charges had been scheduled for April 14.
