KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Local officials are taking steps in preparation for possible cuts to local programs from Washington and Lansing.
An “Intergovernmental Round Table” of local officials from various cities and townships has been formed and will meet monthly to discuss joint actions they may take.
Kalamazoo County board chair Jen Strebs says now is the time to band together.
“I think in the time in front of us, having open lines of communication are really important as we work to advance and protect our local community,” says Strebs.
Tuesday, the Kalamazoo County board will consider granting Chair Strebs the authority to sign for the board, when funding granted to the county by the federal or state government is threatened.
Things are moving quickly in Washington and the county board only meets once every two weeks. They want to be able to react if quick action is required.
Deputy Administrator Lyndi Smith says it’s already happened once with an $18.9 million EPA grant that is currently at risk. A deadline for a response was missed because it fell between meetings.
