OTSEGO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Firefighters in Otsego were able to rescue a woman from a burning home early this morning.
Otsego Police and Fire Director Brad Misner says the dramatic rescue unfolded a few minutes after midnight in the 200 block of South Grant Street. Fire quickly spread through the upstairs living area of the home. Police and fire personnel arrived within minutes of the 911 call and found thick smoke billowing from an upstairs window.
Arriving firefighters discovered one person trapped inside on the second floor of the home. Unable to reach the 49-year-old female due to the severity of the smoke at the top of the stairwell, firefighters turned to the window, where they spotted the victim.
With the fire continuing to spread, Misner says they determined the woman was in immediate danger. Firefighters and members from the Otsego Police Department coordinated a rescue operation, using a ladder from the unattached garage. Assistant Fire Chief Bush was able to reach out to the victim from the garage roof and pull her from the window.
The victim unfortunately was unable to grab onto the garage roof, falling to the ground between the burning house and unattached garage. The woman was assisted out from between the house and garage and brought to safety, receiving immediate medical attention on the scene. She was taken to Bronson Hospital for treatment.
Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control a short time later, and the Fire Marshal is attempting to determine a cause of the fire.
