KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Not seasonally adjusted jobless rates rose in all 18 Michigan labor market areas for January, including in Kalamazoo County.
According to data released last week by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, the Kalamazoo County unemployment rate was 4.9% in January, up from 4.5% in December 2024. The rate in January 2024 was 3.4%.
Wayne Rourke, labor market information director for the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics said in January, Michigan labor market areas demonstrated typical seasonal unemployment rate increases along with the usual winter reduction in payroll jobs.
The jobless rate went up in all neighboring counties in January, with the rate 5.3% in Allegan County, 6.1% in Calhoun and Cass counties, 6.3% in St. Joseph County, and 7.0% in Van Buren County.
The highest unemployment rate in the state for January 2025 was in Mackinac County at 21.6%, while the lowest was in Livingston County at 3.8%
