AUDIO: Kalamazoo Public Schools approves change to semesters from trimesters

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools trustees have made it official, as they will be switching from trimesters back to regular semesters this fall.

They had already approved a new curriculum to fit into the semester structure.

Superintendent Dr. Darrin Slade says teachers approached him to make the change, because he said they feel semesters provide a more consistent educational experience, instead of breaking up the year into thirds.

He says it will also be easier to coordinate with other districts when the new Career Technical and Educational Center opens this fall.

Trimesters were installed years ago by former Superintendent Michael Rice to expose students to more diverse subjects during the school year. But many districts have found it detracts from the core subjects they really need.
