KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A student at Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine has been awarded a student grant of $3,000.
The money is coming from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation.
The grant will allow Sheridan Bernard to speak directly to Bronson Healthcare patients in the emergency department about their knowledge and beliefs regarding medications for opioid use disorder, or MOUD.
She will also discuss factors that might either prevent or encourage MOUD use.
MOUDs like suboxone and methadone cut mortality by 50-to-60% for patients with opioid use disorder according to Dr. Maureen Ford at Bronson. She adds people on MOUD “have a 50% chance of still being in treatment at one year, compared to only about 10% of patients in treatment without medications.”
Dr. Ford says the study will allow them to learn from patients about the barriers they face in learning about and accessing treatment.
