EAST LANSING, MI — Michigan State University head football coach Jonathan Smith confirmed on Tuesday that his football squad will avoid a spring scrimmage at Spartan Stadium in April at the end of spring practice. Instead after 15 days of practice the team will hold a closed scrimmage indoors a the football center on campus in East Lansing, according to Smith.
There is work being done on Spartan Stadium this spring, but that’s not the only reason for the cancellation, Smith said. He’s also worried about other teams poaching players from his squad from the transfer portal, which remains open after spring football concludes.
An MSU spokesman says the school is considering other forms of fan engagement this spring or summer. The Spartans open the season at Spartan Stadium on Saturday August 30 against Western Michigan University.
