COVERT TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Palisades nuclear power plant in Van Buren County’s Covert Township has received nearly $57-million from the U.S. Department of Energy as part of a $1.52-billion loan.
Congressman Bill Huizenga thanked Energy Secretary Chris Wright and President Trump for “advancing Southwest Michigan’s role in our mission to unleash American energy production and strengthen our national energy security.”
The loan was approved under former President Biden and Palisades owner Holtec International is trying to get the plant to be the first in the U.S. to be restarted after it was shut down in 2022. Holtec is also planning to build two industry-first small modular reactor units at the site along the Lake Michigan shore.
