KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools trustees have approved a massive overhaul of their school curriculum for this fall to adjust to the return to regular semesters.
The district is switching from three trimesters back to two semesters this fall term.
Director of Curriculum Dr. Angela Justice says changing semesters means they have had to move content, rename many courses and revise schedules to make sure everything that needs to be included, remains available.
It also means a change in credits required for graduation from 26 to 24.
The school board approved the new fall curriculum this week.
Board vice president Carol McGlinn says getting on the same schedule as the other districts also makes it easier for students to participate with the programs that all the districts share, including the new Career and Technical Education Center opening this fall.
Trustee Patti Sholler-Barber applauded Dr. Justice and her staff for all the work getting everything covered.
It will leave the Gull Lake Community Schools as the only district still using trimesters this fall. Currently there are three in Kalamazoo County.
The district announced earlier this year that they were making the switch back to semesters.
