KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM)- While a co-defendant still faces charges, a Kalamazoo woman will be sentenced later month on arson and murder charges, in a case from 2022.
34-year-old Shawna Fay Kroeger pleaded no contest last month to second-degree arson and second-degree murder in the death of 53-year-old James Travis.
He was found dead after a fire at a Kalamazoo Township home June 18, 2022 on Shakespeare Avenue near Egleston Avenue.
According to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office, additional charges of armed robbery and tampering with evidence were dismissed as the result of the plea.
She was charged in January 2023 of killing Travis while robbing him of marijuana and money, then setting the house Travis was in on fire.
Kroeger will be sentenced March 24, by Kalamazoo County Circuit Judge Paul Bridenstine. There is a sentencing agreement in place for her to serve between 18 and 30 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections.
The second suspect in the case, 53-year-old Andrew John McCormack, is charged with open murder, second-degree arson and tampering with evidence. He has a status hearing scheduled for March 20 in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court.
