KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A multi-year construction project to rebuild the US-131 bridges over KL Avenue and the Amtrak rail in Kalamazoo resumes this coming Monday. The three-year, $24 million project is expected to be completed in June 2026, with this year’s work is expected to go into November.
In addition to rebuilding the two bridges, work includes sanitary sewer, culverts, hot-mix asphalt rebuilding, a nonmotorized path along KL Avenue, approach work, and pavement markings on US-131.
Work this year also includes rebuilding the northbound and southbound US-131 bridges. During that work, KL Avenue will be closed and traffic detoured on Drake Road, West Michigan Avenue and 11th Street.
The Stadium Drive ramp to northbound US-131 also will be closed through June 26, with traffic will be detoured on Stadium Drive, Drake Road and West Main Street.
In late June, the Stadium Drive ramp will reopen and US-131 traffic will be shifted when rebuilding of the southbound bridge begins.
Throughout this year’s work, two lanes of US-131 will be open in each direction using a lane shift and temporary bridge.
