GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A federal lawsuit has been filed against the City of Mackinac Island by Shepler’s Incorporated and the Mackinac Island Ferry Company.
In the lawsuit, they accuse the city council of overstepping their bounds by attempting to control fares and ferry schedules.
The companies are owned by the Hoffman family, who are partners in Shepler’s, bought the MIFC in 2024 and quickly realized the fleet of ferries needed “significant repairs, many of which raised critical safety concerns” according to the lawsuit.
The city council rejected their proposed fare increases for 2025, saying the Hoffman’s are trying to “monopolize” the market.
