LANSING, MI — Many Lansing residents are getting nostalgic this week with the passing of a milestone in their lives. Demolition crews have started tearing down the old Lansing Eastern HS, located just north of UM Health Sparrow’s campus in the city.
The UM Health-Sparrow purchased the building in 2016, and it shut down in 2019. Multi-million-dollar plans to convert the building into a 120-bed psychiatric facility were never realized and now the building is coming down.
Eastern High alumni gathered to watch the demolition on Tuesday, according to a report from media partner 6 News. People at the site said it was bittersweet to see a building, with nearly a hundred years of memories, getting torn down.
“Thousands of Quakers have walked through those halls and left their mark on its walls,” said Eastern grad.
Sparrow officials say they have been working with alumni to save meaningful artifacts from the school—and there are plans for a memorial garden at the site, according to the report from 6 News.
