KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Work planned for downtown Kalamazoo this summer is being pushed back a year, due to delays in the approval for financing with the federal government.
Public Works Director James Baker says the city is behind in their paperwork. They should be going out for bids now to get work done this year, but due to delays with submissions to the Federal Highway Traffic Administration for approval, they have to push it back a year.
Baker was asked if this will threaten obtaining the funds because of Trump administration cuts, but he says they have not received any indications from the federal agency that it will be a problem.
Baker says if they try bidding late this construction season, all the contractors will be committed and that would make getting work done this year very expensive.
Deputy Director Christina Anderson says they are keeping the sequence of the construction planned in place, because it all works together to minimize the disruption to traffic. It will just start it a year later, with the total ‘Streets For All’ conversion to two-way traffic downtown now scheduled for completion in 2030.
