EAST LANSING, MI — There are formal steps that have to take place first, but a report in today’s Detroit Free Press says Michigan State University is at least considering combining its two medical schools into a single program.
MSU is unusual in that it operates two medical schools, according to the report, so now the school is considering creating a single College of Medicine. Right now the College of Human Medicine teaches what’s known as allopathic medicine, sometimes called conventional medicine. Its graduates become M.D.s. On the other side, the school’s College of Osteopathic Medicine teaches the osteopathic approach and graduates there become D.O.s.
Combined, the two schools graduate about 500 physicians each year, making MSU one of the nation’s largest training grounds for doctors, the Free Press report says.
The school says no final plan has been formalized, but it believes a more collaborative approach between the schools would serve the interests of students and the community.
