KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – An organization called People’s Union USA is organizing a 24-hour economic blackout Friday to protest what they say are rising prices, corporate greed, and the rollback of DEI initiatives.
Organizers of the protest in Kalamazoo say they already have 700 people signed up to attend from 12:00-1:30 p.m. Friday at the corner of West Michigan Avenue and Rose Street, in front of the former Kalamazoo County Courthouse.
Michelle Zukowski-Serlin of Kalamazoo says they are encouraging people to avoid purchasing from major retailers like Amazon, Target, Best Buy, Hobby Lobby, McDonald’s and instead support local businesses.
In addition to economic issue, Zukowski-Serlin says the economic blackout day will show “strong support for checks and balances, economic opportunities, security, equality before the law, the right to marry, consumer protection, clean air and water, Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, our civil servants, revenue sharing, reproductive rights, liberty, fairness, and basic decency.”
She says they will be asking and petitioning Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-4th District) to hold a town hall to discuss their concerns.
Rallies are planned across the country.
