KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County officials are trying to squeeze every cent they can get out of the opioid settlement dollars that will be flowing into the county for the next 13 years.
The money is coming from pharmaceutical firms and distributors who are being held responsible for the opioid crisis. Last night, county commissioners authorized the treasurer to keep the millions in a separate account, so the interest earned on that money can be rolled back into treatment and prevention.
Treasurer Thomas Whitener says a separate account will widen the scope of investments that will be possible.
Vice chair John Taylor says their aim is to make it last.
Whitener will draft a formal proposal based on the board’s response and return it for final approval at their first meeting next month.
