PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage Department of Public Safety is looking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect involved in a non-fatal hit and run of a bicyclist Monday night.
At approximately 10:40 p.m., Portage Police and Fire personnel responded to the area of Lovers Lane near Stryker Way on a report of a bicyclist who had been struck by a vehicle. They rendered emergency aid to the victim, who was then transported to Bronson Hospital.
Police say the cyclist was traveling southbound on Lovers Lane when he was struck from behind by a southbound vehicle which then fled the scene. Based on evidence recovered from the crash site, the vehicle involved is believed to be a 2016 – 2024 Mazda CX5 or CX9, black in color.
The victim, a 47-year-old Portage man, remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The bicyclist is my brother TJ — He’s been a cashier at Walgreens in Portage, MI at the corner of Westnedge and Milham for over 10 years, riding his bike nearly 10 miles round trip to work — no matter the weather — to greet his customers with kindness and a smile.
TJ is incredibly lucky to be alive, but he’s recovering from a bad concussion and other injuries. He’s staying with my husband and me while he heals, hoping to get back to work and his beloved customers in a few weeks.
We’re raising funds to help cover his medical bills and get him a car so he can commute safely. If you’re able to donate or share, we would be so grateful. Every bit helps TJ get back on his feet (and off a bike)!
Thank you so much for your love and support.
