BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Free gun locks are being made available by the Calhoun County Public Health Department.
CCHPD says the gun locks are free to any county resident who has guns in their home and children living there.
The gun locks are mandated by the state law that took effect on February 13, 2024 that any homes with children need to have unattended firearms stored unloaded and secured, either in a gun safe or with a gun lock.
The storage law is part of a broader push for safe gun storage to prevent children from accessing the guns or someone who is at risk of self-harm.
The gun locks will be available at Calhoun County Public Health Department offices along with various community events around the county. The offices are at 115 Market Place in Albion and 190 East Michigan Avenue in Battle Creek.
