KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo City Manager Jim Ritsema is retiring effective November 18.
He announced his retirement in a letter to Mayor David Anderson and the city commission, calling his time leading Kalamazoo “an honor and a privilege,” saying they “worked tirelessly to address challenges, embrace opportunities, and create a vision for Kalamazoo that prioritizes inclusivity, innovation, and sustainability.”
Ritsema has been Kalamazoo’s city manager since 2013 and previously served as finance director of Marshall and Battle Creek and was Battle Creek’s assistant city manager.
The city manager is appointed by the city commission, and the process to find his successor will begin later this year.
Ritsema says he has no solid plans for his retirement, but looks forward to spending more time with his family and his six-month-old grandson.
