KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners have been taking a beating from homeless advocates for months as they complain that City Hall and the commissioners aren’t doing enough to solve the problem.
Mayor Dave Anderson says, in defending the commission, that they are doing what they can and its more than any other local municipality.
He says it isn’t just a city problem or the city’s responsibility.
Talk to officials in other municipalities with higher tax bases, like Portage, and they point out that their residents pay more into Kalamazoo County’s housing millage on average, than city of Kalamazoo residents do.
But county commissioners also concede right now that not enough of those revenues are being spent to create housing for the poorest among us, because developers can’t make the numbers work, even with state and local subsidies.
