PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A lesson currently taught to 9th graders in Portage Public Schools about pornography might be moved to 6th grade.
The school board is considering the move because the district says technology is making the material available to people at a younger age.
Portage West Middle School healthy living teacher Ann Schnurstein says they’re hoping students know they can talk about what they see and not be ashamed, and the district says the lesson will be age-appropriate for 6th graders.
The board showed the lesson’s slides to parents at three public hearings and made adjustments based on feedback.
The course also includes healthy relationships, making smart decisions online, and recognizing that what is seen online is not reality.
The board is also considering updates to a lesson for 6th graders on how HIV/AIDS is transmitted.
The changes were discussed by the school board in January. A vote will happen at a later meeting.
