BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Battle Creek Fire Department is installing specialize smoke alarms in homes in the city.
They have teamed up with local service organizations for the effort to help people with hearing impairments.
They have provided and installed up to three smoke detectors and one carbon monoxide alarm in homes in the city for over two decades.
The city received a Fire Prevention and Safety Grant from FEMA in 2023 to cover the costs of up to 200 people who are deaf, deafblind, or hard of hearing.
The fire department is working with CareWell Services and the Disability Network Southwest Michigan to expand support referrals.
People who need the smoke alarms should contact Fire Station 1 for an appointment. They need to be a homeowner in the city of Battle Creek and appointments are on a first-come, first-served basis.
