KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners call it their favorite meeting of the year.
Last night they awarded eight local teens the annual 2025 Social Justice Youth Awards.
The honorees are nominated by community members and sponsored by local businesses and organizations that promote fair play and human rights.
Dr. Lewis Walker of the Western Michigan University School for Social Justice says not only are they activists for social justice, but leaders in many school and community organizations, and we need more.

Audio PlayerThe winners are Kalamazoo Central High School students Layla Hemphill, Winter Owens, Michael T. Scott and Dontray Hemphill and Loy Norrix High School students Isabella Morris and Paul Evans, and Portage students Ava Tate and Omar Elghawy.
The honorees will each receive scholarship money and a one-year membership in the Kalamazoo NAACP.
