KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – As expected, the Kalamazoo Public Schools board has voted to move El Sol Elementary School to a new building they plan to construct in Kalamazoo Township, but there was also something in superintendent Dr. Darrin Slade’s recommendation for the Vine neighborhood, which has been vocally opposed to the idea.
Audio PlayerDr. Slade told us after the meeting that the new committee will be made up of staff, community stakeholders and several volunteers from Vine.
He says he has no idea what could end up at the current location.
Audio PlayerBut he says it probably won’t be another elementary, as the numbers just aren’t there.
Audio PlayerThe board of trustees unanimously supported moving the school, and strongly endorsed the establishment of the proposed committee.
Audio PlayerBoard president Ti’Anna Harrison says she wanted the Vine neighborhood to know that they had been heard.
Audio PlayerTwo Vine residents, Alex Demetralis and Dr. David Wilson, told trustees they are glad to hear about the committee, but Wilson says he’s still sad to be losing their elementary school.
Audio PlayerThe building on Vine Street will continue to house El Sol Elementary, which serves the entire district with its Spanish language programs, for at least the next three years.
That’s how long they think it will take to build the new $45 million school on a 12-acre lot on Baker Street.
