PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage city council has voted to change how they allow trash haulers to do business on their streets.
They have revised their ordinance to only allow one firm to do the job to reduce wear and tear on the streets, and to hopefully reduce rates, which are some of the highest in the area.
First the city will have to go through a bidding process to find a company willing to take on the job, especially with some of the new demands the city is requiring.
This week, Nate Niewoonder of Best Way Disposal objected to a few of them.
City Manager Pat McGinnis says he is asking that bidders submit their questions in writing.
No timeline for implementing the new ordinance was announced. That may depend on how long it takes to find a waste hauler, and how long it will take them to ramp up.
