LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Jocelyn Benson is making it official that she is seeking the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in 2026.
Michigan’s Secretary of State announced Wednesday morning that she was a candidate to succeed Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
Benson joins Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Michigan Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt in the field, with Duggan running as an Independent and Nesbitt as a Republican.
In her video announcement, she says everyone has a responsibility “to ensure that everyone gets a fair shot in life.” Benson references her background as Secretary of State to make sure every voice heard and said she has never backed down from a tough fight or hard work.
Benson also ran Wayne State University’s Law School and says she lowered costs by freezing tuition and expanding scholarships.
Her campaign put up a post on X Tuesday night launching her bid, but quickly took it down. Nesbitt issued a response saying “Wow! Gerrymander Jocelyn is in and out. Did we scare her off?”
Benson has been endorsed by Grand Rapids Mayor David LaGrand.
