PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Your trash bill may be going down in Portage, if the city council approves ordinance changes that would eliminate competition and permit just one hauler.
Portage began regulating the trash companies last year, after complaints from some homeowners that they were being overcharged. The council could take the next step tonight at their regular meeting.
City Manager Pat McGinnis says a study of rates in comparable cities shows Portage residents are paying more.
He says contracting with one hauler will result in more efficiency, resulting in lower bills, with fewer trucks obstructing traffic, less noise and wear and tear on residential streets.
