KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County board will be taking care of unfinished business this evening.
They deadlocked on who should serve as vice chair pro tem at their annual organizational meeting earlier this month. The vote came down to Republican Jeff Heppler, who held the seat last year, and Democrat Monteze Morales.
Morales feels a woman of color should hold the seat, since the chair and vice chair are both white.
Vice chair John Taylor suggested the chair allow a commissioner of color to attend the pre-meetings when the agenda is set, because that is the main job of the leadership team.
Heppler, who was not at the last meeting because of a medical problem, would be the tie-breaker.
