KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools have already taken steps to harden school buildings, with secure entrances, camera surveillance and officials are now considering metal detectors.
They are already using them at sports events.
Superintendent Dr. Darrin Slade says it would make the schools more secure if they were also installed at the entrances of the high schools and middle schools.
That is one of the topics planned for safety and security meetings he has scheduled with the community.
“We are proposing to add an extra layer of security, but we wanted to discuss this with the community first, so we are having three meetings,” says Slade.
The first will be held Tuesday evening at Loy Norrix High School.
“We are going to talk about safety and security but were also going to roll out the possibility of having weapons detectors in our schools.”
The second session is planned for next Tuesday, the 28th, at Maple Street Middle School, and the third will be February 10th at Kalamazoo Central High School.
All the sessions will start at 6 p.m.
We initially reported the first meeting was set for Monday. We have corrected the story to indicate it will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 21 at Loy Norrix High School. We regret the error.
