KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo residents who want to make their opinions known on plans to revamp Michigan Avenue downtown will get a chance this week.
The larger “Safe Streets for All” project got underway last year and it was a bumpy one. Construction on Kalamazoo Avenue begins this spring.
Actual construction on Michigan Avenue is two years away but design work has already begun according to city chief operating officer Laura Lam. Those preliminary plans will be presented for comment at an open house on Thursday.
The goal of the change is to make downtown Kalamazoo a friendlier place for those who work, shop and live downtown.
A survey shows 88% of the drivers downtown were headed elsewhere. Traffic engineer Dennis Randolph told commissioners in November they also hope to divert them to other routes.
The open house will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Kalamazoo Nonprofit Advocacy Coalition Building at 315 West Michigan Avenue at the corner of Church Street.
