KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One person died and several others had to rescued in a series of fires in Kalamazoo Sunday afternoon and evening.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety was dispatched to a fire in the 2800 block of South Burdick Street around 7:20 p.m. They found heavy smoke from the second floor of a multi-family dwelling. A KDPS sergeant saw a resident attempting to escape through a second-floor window and assisted them to safety.
A 79-year-old woman though was found dead inside the residence. The fire was brought under control by 8:05 PM, with assistance from Comstock Township Fire Department and Kalamazoo Township Fire Department.
Investigators determined the fire was caused by cooking-related activity.
Earlier in the day, KDPS responded to the 800 block of East Walnut Street at 4:50 p.m. for an apartment fire. Crews rescued one individual, who had barricaded himself inside.
Investigators were able to determine the fire was started by the tenant that was rescued. The fire was brought under control by 7:41 p.m. with support from Comstock Fire, Kalamazoo Township Fire Department, and Oshtemo Township Fire Department.
They were also called out to the 700 block of Norton Drive for a basement fire that was reported at 5:27 p.m. and quickly contained by 5:56 p.m. The cause of the fire is believed to be a mechanical issue with the furnace.
