COLON, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Two men were arrested near Colon after authorities say they stole a tree that had previously been cut down in Cass County and were trying to sell it.
Cass County Sheriff Clint Roach says a large walnut tree valued at approximately $2,000 was stolen January 4 in the 61000 block of Old Mill Road in the county’s Pokagon Township. Deputies and detectives began to investigate and follow up on tips received.
Tuesday detectives responded to a location in Colon, along with the St. Joseph County Sheriffs Office, on information that two suspects were attempting to sell the tree.
The stolen tree was located and returned to the owner.
A 35-year-old male was arrested on a probation violation warrant. A 51-year-old male was arrested on a parole absconder warrant.
Detectives say they are requesting charges for both suspects involved in the larceny and sale of the tree.
Agencies assisting with the investigation were the Cass County Drug Enforcement Team and the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation is ongoing.
