WASHINGTON, DC (WKZO AM/FM) – Congressman Bill Huizenga of Zeeland is pleased with President Biden signing water infrastructure priorities in Battle Creek, Holland, Kalamazoo, and St. Joseph into law.
Huizenga had advocated for the projects in the communities in the 4th Congressional District.
He says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers “can strengthen the local economy, enhance recreational opportunities, and take steps to mitigate and address urban flooding” across southwest Michigan.
The Thomas R. Carter Water Resources Development Act of 2024 will authorize the Army Corps to study the outer and inner harbor in Holland to examine the economic and navigational benefits of deepening the harbor. The current outer harbor is 23-feet deep, and the inner harbor into Lake Macatawa is 21-feet deep.
The WRDA will authorize a new study of the Kalamazoo River Watershed to examine urban flooding in the city of Kalamazoo to set the stage for upcoming projects.
The WRDA will also allow for a similar study on the outer and inner harbor in St. Joseph as will be done in Holland, and in Battle Creek, it will authorize a study on restoring the Kalamazoo River in the city’s downtown.
