BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One of two teenagers charged as adults in the February 2023 death of Battle Creek Central High School senior Jack Snyder was sentenced on Monday.
WWMT-TV reports 14-year-old Dewond Estes III was given a blended sentence by Judge John Hallacy after Estes entered a guilty plea in October to a carjacking charge. In exchange for his plea, a murder charge was dropped by prosecutors.
Estes was ordered to stay in a juvenile home until he turns 18. In addition, he will be monitored in court hearings every 90 days. Eventually, a decision will be made on whether or not Estes will get an adult sentence.
Estes admitted in October that he talked to someone on Snapchat with the username “Spaz” about stealing a car for money before Snyder was killed, but that person has not yet been arrested.
15-year-old Justice Chimner entered a guilty plea on December 12 and the judge agreed to sentence him to between 35 and 60 years in prison when he is sentenced on March 3.
Chimner was 14 when Snyder offered him and Estes a ride home.
The two younger teens then tried to carjack Snyder and a shot went off from Chimner’s gun. He admitted to pulling the trigger.
