KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Figures released Thursday by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget showed unemployment rates for area counties in November near steady from October this year, but up substantially from 2023.
The data showed not seasonally adjusted unemployment rates advanced in 11 of the state’s 17 labor market areas over the month
Labor market information director for the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics Wayne Rourke said, “Michigan regional unemployment rate gains were primarily due to workforce advances across most labor market areas over the month. Payroll jobs also rose over the month in the majority of Michigan metro areas.”
Kalamazoo County’s unemployment rate in November 2024 was 4.2%, which is up from 4.1% in October and much higher than the November 2023 rate of 2.9%.
Calhoun County’s rate went from 4.9% in October to 5.0% in November, while Van Buren County’s rate went from 4.8% in October to 5.0% in November. The rate also went up .1% in Cass (4.7%) and Allegan (3.7%) counties. The St. Joseph County unemployment dropped from 4.7% in October to 4.6% in November. All the area counties saw a rise from November 2023.
Michigan’s November unemployment rate was at 4.8% after starting 2024 at 4.0%.
November unemployment rates around Michigan ranged from 3.3% in Livingston County to 9.8% in Oscoda County.
