KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A brand-new nonprofit is setting up operations in Kalamazoo to serve the world and is looking for volunteers.
The Kalamazoo Valley Gleaners has procured a 23,000 square foot building on King Highway they will use to process local food to fight global hunger.
Jim Van Tuinen says their model is simple: fight food waste here by channeling it to hungry mouths everywhere.
He says they will need about 50 volunteers daily to operate the facility.
Jane Van Tuinen says they use a $250,000 dehydrator to make preservation and shipping of the veggies possible.
Kalamazoo Vice Mayor Jeanne Hess says the organization is very much in the spirit of the holidays.
They have raised $2-million to buy the building and the equipment, and made arrangements with local farmers for discarded produce and hope to start full time operations in mid-January.
You can volunteer at their website.
