LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Lawmakers in Lansing are running out of time to change Michigan’s tipped-worker minimum wage.
The House yesterday adjourned until after Christmas. Lawmakers are now not due back at the Capitol until December 30.
Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree over the law that will hike Michigan’s minimum wage for tipped employees to 15 dollars an-hour. That law is set to take effect in February. Republicans want to stop it before it does. They say forcing bars and restaurants to pay servers and bartenders that much more will cost jobs, force some places to close, and could actually take money out of the pockets of tipped workers.
No bills were taken up yesterday due to a lack of attendance, as Republicans and one Democrat stayed away from the chamber.
Democrats have said they’re willing to work with Republicans, but they haven’t shown any real effort in the closing days of the year.
The House will gather December 31, but only to officially adjourn the session. Republicans will have control of the House when the new session begins.
