KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A 22-year-old Kalamazoo man has been convicted of murder in the shooting death of another man in 2023.
The Kalamazoo County Circuit Court jury Friday found Axel Armando Zuniga-Rivera guilty on charges of first-degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of felony firearm in connection with the 2023 shooting death of 24-year-old Marcell Savon Alguarelles-Bell.
According to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, officers August 26, 2023 responded to a shooting in the 1600 block of East Stockbridge Avenue. They found Alguarelles-Bell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died from his wounds at a local hospital.
Police say before his passing, Alguarelles-Bell was able to identify Zuniga-Rivera as the individual who shot him. Following the shooting, Zuniga-Rivera fled Michigan and was apprehended in Indianapolis September 7, 2023, through coordinated efforts with local and federal law enforcement.
He was later extradited to Michigan to stand trial. He is scheduled to be sentenced January 10, 2025.
