KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County commissioners have given the public a bigger role to play in how money from the new senior millage is spent.
The county collects the $2.8 million the millage brings in, but the actual work of providing Meals on Wheels, home repairs, building handicapped ramps, and medical, legal and home care support is provided by private contractors and non-profit agencies that bid on the jobs.
This year, the county board established a diverse allocation committee to go through the bids.
Cassie Bailey from the Area Agency on Agency says it was a lot of work.
Just carrying the notebooks with the bid information was a chore.
The bidding process has typically been handled by county staff, but board vice chair John Taylor says this is a better way to do it.
The full board will take a vote on the panel’s recommendations at their next regular meeting.
