KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Plans for a groundbreaking ceremony for Kalamazoo Public Schools new central kitchen were cancelled Thursday because of the snowy weather.
There is another construction project planned in the KPS district, to replace the current El Sol Elementary on Vine Street with a new building. The building that houses English/Spanish immersion school was built in 1924, making it 100 years old.
Superintendent Darrin Slade says three community sessions are planned for Monday to talk about options.
Audio PlayerThat structure has served the district in several capacities since its construction, everything from an elementary, to a middle school and even an alternative high school.
Funding for the new school was included in the 2022 bond.
The space on Vine Street is limited, and a number of outdoor amenities would have to be sacrificed to make room for a new school at that location.
They are also looking at the 12-acre site on Baker Drive on the East Side, the former home of Brucker Elementary.
Audio PlayerWith enough room, they could add a number of amenities, and possibly expand the language program from just the elementary grades to kindergarten through 8th grade.
The meetings today will be held at 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 6 p.m. in the Community Education Center at 714 South Westnedge Avenue.
