PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Financial scams targeting older adults are being investigated in Portage.
The police division of the Portage Department of Public Safety says several victims were contacted by phone and the callers asked for “large sums of cash.”
Some were people impersonating family members who called to say they were in distress and needed immediate cash, and others offered to fix a non-existent problem on the victim’s computer or resolve fictitious fraudulent activity at a bank.
Scammers have also arranged to have couriers contact the victim to pick up the money.
Portage authorities have not said how much money victims in the city have been conned out of, if any.
They urge anyone with information on the scams to call Portage Public Safety at (269) 329-4567 or Kalamazoo Silent Observer at (269) 343-2100. You can also go online to kalamazoosilentobserver.com.
