KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Blowing snow and slippery road conditions led to multiple accidents in the Kalamazoo area Thursday, with I-94 being shut down eight separate times over nine hours during the snowstorm.
The first major accident on I-94 happened shortly before 4:00 a.m., with all westbound lanes near Exit 66 at Mattawan closed for about 45 minutes.
Other morning closures occurred at the M-37 (Climax) Exit 92 in Calhoun County, later in the morning near Exit 66 in the westbound lanes, the westbound lanes at Exit 88 (Galesburg) in Kalamazoo County, eastbound I-94 closed at Sprinkle Road, Exit 80 in Kalamazoo County due to the crash involving two semis, and westbound I-94 at Red Arrow Highway, Exit 23, in Berrien County was also closed for over two hours.
Westbound I-94 was shut down shortly after 1:00 p.m. for a crash at Exit 72 at Ninth Street. The Michigan Department of Transportation says the expressway reopened at 3:44 p.m.
There is no word on any injuries from the series of accidents.
With several more inches of snow predicted through Friday morning, MDOT officials expect travel conditions to deteriorate throughout the evening in areas west of Kalamazoo.
